The price also depends on where you shop. Introductory rates are some of the best we’ve seen, but McAfee doesn’t impress on renewal. Devices include any smartphone, tablet or computer, and all of them sync when you open the McAfee UI. It’s under $10 per machine and you get the same features. We recommend going with a plan for five or 10 devices. Once renewal time comes, the prices even out. It’s cheaper than Norton’s Basic plan (read our Norton Antivirus review) and comes with more for your money, at least for the first year. The $24.99 rate for a single device isn’t bad. Total Protection isn’t expensive for an individual user, but the best rate comes when you buy it for multiple computers. McAfee has caught on to this trend and priced its products accordingly. Now, with multiple laptops, smartphones and tablets running around, antivirus needs to support multiple machines. McAfee Total Protection Features OverviewĪntivirus isn’t what it used to be: security for a single, central computer for the house. Shredder is probably performing a similar function to Dban, rewriting the binary, so a deleted file can’t be stitched back together. Even when you remove an item from a recycling bin, a crafty hacker can reconstruct it using hard drive forensics. McAfee isn’t clear about what Shredder is doing, but if we had to guess, it’d be rewriting the binary on a drive. You can shred any folder, but McAfee is pointed toward your recycling bin by default. Like a paper shredder, this tool obliterates your sensitive digital data. Having a central location for updates is nice. Whenever you run a scan, McAfee will check for application updates. Total Protection performs automatic updates for you, as long as you allow it. Parental control is turned off by default, but you can switch it on in the “privacy” tab of the UI to set restricted sites. Web monitoring also removes trackers and cookies and comes with parental control. There were slight changes from each test, but you should see little to no effect on speed. We tested how much of a performance hit web monitoring gave and couldn’t detect anything meaningful. You’ll see a small, ugly verification mark in Google search results, too. McAfee will filter sites as you access them, as well as scan files before you download. True Key is a nice addition, but we recommend Dashlane (read our Dashlane review) for password manager chores. You get a clean UI similar to LastPass (read our LastPass review) and two-factor authentication options, but it doesn’t support the best 2FA apps. When compared to the best password managers, True Key suffices, but isn’t astounding. Total Protection includes five licenses of the manager for free, normally a $99.99 value, and we’re impressed by the performance. True Key is the password manager, a tool that normally runs $19.99 annually for 10,000 entries, which might as well be unlimited. Total Protection provides more than that, though, with web monitoring, automatic updates and a password manager. The core of Mcafee Total Protection is antivirus, scanning your files for corruption. On Tuesday morning, Telnaes hinted of the possibility that she might take square aim at Cruz’s decision to use his daughters in the comedy sketch, cryptically Tweeting the following: Stick w/ attacking me–Caroline & Catherine are out of your league. Within an hour, Ted Cruz took to Twitter to bash the “classy” display from The Washington Post cartoonist, noting that his daughters “Caroline & Catherine are out of your league.”Ĭlassy. Ted Cruz uses his kids as political props /GNfoP4batF Telnaes wasted no time in hitting at the heart of the parody, and illustrated Cruz as a boot-sporting Santa organ grinder making his children monkey dance: Seuss “classics” like “How Obamacare Stole Christmas”. The video in question stars the Texas Senator alongside his two daughters reading parody Dr. In her write-up for The Washington Post online, Telnaes acknowledges that, “There is an unspoken rule in editorial cartooning that a politician’s children are off-limits.” However Telnaes clarified why her recent artwork was deserving of exemption status from that unspoken rule:īut when a politician uses his children as political props, as Ted Cruz recently did in his Christmas parody video in which his eldest daughter read (with her father’s dramatic flourish) a passage of an edited Christmas classic, then I figure they are fair game. Ann Telnaes, an editorial cartoonist from The Washington Post, created and published a cartoon recently that depicted GOP candidate Ted Cruz and his children (the cartoon was actually a GIF since it’s 2015 - what would Charles Addams say to GIFs, I wonder?). Ford's SYNC 3 software is a cinch to figure out, and offers further functions such as Australian-tuned voice recognition and a system that can call 000 and send your coordinates when the airbags go off or the fuel pump switches off, provided you're paired up by Bluetooth. The old 6.5-inch screen is replaced by an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, USB, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, digital radio, and the option of satellite navigation for $600. The driver's instruments are simple to configure and include a digital speedo and distance-to-empty readout, and the various audio and phone shortcuts on the wheel take little time to familiarise with. There's lots of storage, as well: to its credit there's a big bin under that two-person bench, plus bottle holders in the doors and next to front occupants' knees, cupholders next to the outer vents, open cubbies atop the dash, and an open glovebox alongside a lidded one. Middle-seat leg room is minimal, and you might be inclined to option your Transit as a two-seater – which you can. Our test van had three seats, but the two-person passenger-side bench isn't much chop, since the gearstick protrudes into the space so much. Both outboard seats are even heated for cold mornings. The cloth-trimmed driver's seat has ample adjustment including a tilting base and a flip-down armrest, and the steering wheel has both height and reach adjustments. The Transit's cabin is for the most part a good workspace, with some ergonomic quirks. It lines up against new or recently updated competitors such as the Volkswagen Crafter 35 TDI 340 ($52,290), Toyota HiAce Super LWB ($52,140), Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 311 CDI MWB ($54,930), and Renault Master Pro MWB/LWB ($49,990/$51,990). It’s far from the only large van to get a touch-up in recent times. Ford Australia charges $53,190 before on-road costs for the version tested here, with the automatic transmission favoured by most buyers. The version we’re looking at here is called 350L, and it’s the entry point to a range that comprises the 350E and 470E Jumbo Vans and 470 cab-chassis. Reflecting growing demand from fleets with OH&S policies (and presumably tradies and logistics workers fed up with being given short shrift), the updates include more safety features to be mentioned a little further down. The Blue Oval brand rolled out a series of updates to its load-carrying staple last last year, a few months after it launched a revised version of the smaller – and increasingly popular – Transit Custom. Previously, I used to avoid switching themes in the terminal, because it never seemed to work cleanly. I mostly use a dark theme, but sometimes my eyes feel like they need a light background. Better still, it carries through beautifully to vim/neovim if you use the terminal versions of those editors. This allows you to skip having to set up themes in Terminal or iTerm2, and instead change them on the fly with a command at the command line. The themes themselves are very nicely done (I use base16-material for a dark theme and base16_one-light or base16_tomorrow for a light theme), but the base16-shell tool makes it even better. Finally, in my wanderings through other people’s dotfiles, I came across the base16 framework for syntax highlighting themes. It is incredibly handy once you’ve got it set up, and makes navigating around deeply nested folders simple. Once you hit enter, you are back on your command line, and you can complete your command. This is filtered as you type in a ‘fuzzy’ fashion, so it’s easy to narrow it down to what you want. vim ), then hit Ctrl-t and a recursive list of files in your current directory pops up. If you want to open a file or cd to a directory (which isn’t yet recorded in z), you can start to type the command (e.g. I also installed (properly this time) z which enables you to easily jump to directories you have previously visited, and fzf which is like Alfred or Launchbar for the command line. I did clean out some of the plugins that I wasn’t using to make things a bit snappier. I’m not sure that I really need all that configurability, since my use of the shell is fairly simple, but for now I’m sticking with it. I use zsh as my shell, along with the ubiquitous oh my zsh. I have started using pyenv to manage my Python versions (with the help of specific requirements.txt files), and I am thinking about using a Homebrew Brewfile to be able to easily reinstall all the tools I need. I’m not quite there yet, but my aim is to set this system up so that I could bootstrap a full installation of my command line tools and configuration on a fresh system. It made me think about the best way to organise my configuration files to make it easier to keep them up to date, so that was a bonus. You can optionally run shell commands (‘actions’) as you do so, which is handy for updating vim plugins after you have copied your vim config across. The idea is that you create a *.yaml format config file to tell dotdrop how to link (or copy) your files into your home directory. I ended up with dotdrop, which I have to say I like a lot. I decided to start with a more or less clean slate, and looked around for an easier way to maintain my configuration (dotfiles), that would allow me to sync them between the various machines I use. A couple of weeks ago, I decided that I needed a total spring clean of my command line setup, to rationalise it a bit, as it had got cluttered up with layers of things that I had tried out then dropped, or which had become broken with updates of other elements of the system: in other words, dependency hell. After my workload subsided a bit, I wandered between different editors, but not really settling. I didn’t have time to fix it, and so went back to using Sublime Text (which is also a fantastic text editor). I used it for quite a while until I got to a busy patch and simultaneously had a persistent issue with org mode and a couple of other things. I love Spacemacs and think it is a terrific project with lots of fantastic features. My most recent serious editor exploration was of Spacemacs. With that in mind, I got the editor-tinkering itch recently, so I thought I’d write about about the changes I’ve made. It is also the case that editors are being improved all the time, so it is worth occasionally trying out (or re-visiting) and editor to see if it fits your needs better than your current system. For one thing, I think there probably isn’t such a thing: I use a text editor for many different tasks, and in each of those I have different priorities for my working environment. I’ve long since come to terms with the fact that I will probably never settle for good on the One True Text Editor. Let’s face it, if you’ve read this blog for any length of time, you know full well that I need no excuse whatsoever to tinker with my setup. I’m not someone who sets about the house with a duster and mop when spring arrives, but I am a fan of having a spring clean of my text editing setup. cow milk, how do they differ? Differences in Production One of the most popular alternative milks is almond milk. Whether you suffer from lactose intolerance, prefer to follow a plant-based diet, or simply don’t like the taste of dairy milk, many people are turning to alternative types of milk for their daily needs. That basically means the consistency might be thicker or more gel-like than commercial brands.Lactose intolerance, or difficulty digesting dairy products that contain lactose, is incredibly common and is estimated to affect approximately 65 percent of the global population. Just give it a good shake and it should be good as new.įYI: Homemade oat milk is not hydrolyzed. The thicker bits might settle to the bottom, but don’t let that put you off. Homemade oat milk should last up to 3 days if you keep it in the fridge. Use a sieve or coffee filter to remove the very last of the oat pulp.Blend the mixture until the oats pulverize completely.Drain your soaked oats and put them in a blender with 3 cups of cold water and 1/2 teaspoon of salt.Soak 1/2 cup of rolled oats overnight in a covered bowl of water at room temperature. We use salt to tweak the flavor a bit, but you can totes skip that step if you want. Oat milk is typically as easy to create yourself as almond milk. But overall, oat milk is the clear winner this round. On the other hand, it does need more land space, which could translate to higher CO 2 emissions depending on the farming methods. Is oat milk environmentally-friendly?įarming oats takes drastically less water than almond trees. Oat milk is less likely to need these extras to be enjoyable in cooking or cookie-dipping. Not all of these ingredients are great for you. It’s a bit higher in carbs and calories (but that’s not necessarily a bad thing).Īlmond milk often contains more additives than oat to thicken and sweeten it up. Oat milk and almond milk are similar in nutritional content, but oat offers slightly more protein, fiber, phosphorus, and vitamin B12. On the other hand, it’s higher in carbs and calories than some other milk alternatives. It’s way better for the environment and may contain fewer additives than almond milk brands. Oat milk is a sweet, creamy alternative to dairy. Considering how simple it is to make, you can easily whip up a fresh batch twice a week and never run out. Drain the liquid from the pulp using a strainer or coffee filter.īTW, if you keep homemade almond milk in the fridge, it’ll last 2 or 3 days.Blend til you’re left with liquid and almond pulp.Put them into a blender with 3 cups of cold water.Let them soak for at least 4 hours, but overnight is typically best.Soak 2/3 cup of whole almonds in a covered bowl of water.Yes! You can make almond milk yourself and be confident of no surprising additives. The study also noted that 80 percent of almonds grow in drought-stricken California. It takes an average of 3.2 gallons (12 liters) of water to grow a single almond, according to a 2018 study. While almond milk might be a more ethical option if you steer clear of cow milk, it might not be the most sustainable substitute. Some brands are full of added sugars that might not be great for your health. But things might get more complex depending on what brand you pick. On the surface, almond milk looks really nutritious. Some almond milk brands fortify their products with ingredients like calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, and copper. Antioxidants can help reduce the risk of strokes, heart disease, and certain cancers. Is almond milk actually healthy?Īlmond milk is low calorie, lactose-free, and contains enough vitamin E to act as a solid antioxidant. But there are def some potential pitfalls to be aware of. (More on that in a minute!)Īlmond milk is a lower carb dairy alternative that can taste great in lots of meals, drinks, and baked goods. Or, make your own almond or oat milk so you know exactly what’s in it. Check for additives that might not agree with you. That said, it’s a good idea to always look at product ingredient lists as you consider buying. But this additive links to inflammation in folks who have inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. This comes from seaweed and brands might use it as a thickening agent. Other times it’s about improving the flavor or texture.įor example, almond milk sometimes contains carrageenan. Sometimes this helps bulk up nutritional benefits with stuff like calcium and vitamin D. It’s important to note that lots of oat and almond milk brands throw extra stuff into their products. Platelets form MPs and participate in arthritis pathophysiology via stimulation of the collagen receptor GPVI. ( C) Flow cytometric quantification of CD41 + platelet MPs (<1 μm as determined by size calibration beads) in RA and OA SF after removal of leukocytes by centrifugation ( n = 20 donors per group). (Gray fill, isotype control.) Data are representative of profiles from eight RA patients. Events were gated based on the forward-scatter parameters indicated in (A). ( B) Representative histogram of CD41 + (black fill) platelet MPs resident in RA SF. Populations identified by further gating and lineage marker staining are labeled. ( A) Forward- by side-scatter profiles of events in RA SF. Cells in freshly isolated RA SF were stained with lineage markers: CD15 (neutrophils), CD3 (T cells), CD14 (monocytes and macrophages) and CD41 (platelets), or the appropriate isotype controls and analyzed by flow cytometry. Platelet MPs are abundant in inflammatory SF. Thus, these findings demonstrate a previously unappreciated role for platelets and their activation-induced microparticles in inflammatory joint diseases. Using both pharmacologic and genetic approaches, we identified the collagen receptor glycoprotein VI as a key trigger for platelet microparticle generation in arthritis pathophysiology. Consistent with these findings, depletion of platelets attenuated murine inflammatory arthritis. Platelet microparticles were proinflammatory, eliciting cytokine responses from synovial fibroblasts via interleukin-1. We identified platelet microparticles-submicrometer vesicles elaborated by activated platelets-in joint fluid from patients with rheumatoid arthritis and other forms of inflammatory arthritis, but not in joint fluid from patients with osteoarthritis. We investigated the role of platelets in the autoimmune disease rheumatoid arthritis. In addition to their pivotal role in thrombosis and wound repair, platelets participate in inflammatory responses. Once released and stabilized after addressing any bugs or issues, we will immediately continue the work of improving the 733 in several areas. We believe we can do this work within 5-7 weeks from today, and have a solid platform to continue improvements. A good portion of this has already been completed, and other bits are still in the works. Once these are complete, we will release the update. Rework our GUI interface to a more flexible, imGUI based infrastructure Items to be included in the initial v12 release:Īll-new, high resolution 3D cabin interiorĮnsure satisfactory flight and systems performance What's to come prior to the initial v12 release? With the pesky 747 certification process out of the way, Jan has actively resumed flight testing / tweaking things, and if anybody is curious, the team does NOT plan to develop a 747 product. We've included some pics / links of the interior work in progress below.īackground on why this news is only just coming out…įlight testing was delayed slightly while Laminar made alterations that affect certain areas of our models, but also because who handles the flight model, was working towards his 747 Captain rating (now since ngratulations Jan!). This work has been ongoing for the previous months and is responsible for most of the development time by far. So in order to provide additional value, we decided to develop an all-new 3D cabin, working cabin doors and wing-flex to include in the update and gain momentum towards overhauling the 733 to modern 3D standards. This all said, we also want to provide existing customers with additional value for the upgrade cost, above and beyond just the 'porting' work required to gain Version 12 compatibility. Our goal is to keep the upgrade pricing within reach of all customers at a fair price, and will ensure continued development of the IXEG 737 into the future. For customers having purchased the IXEG 737 on or before February 6th, 2022, the upgrade will be a paid upgrade of $14.95 USD. Per that statement, we are honoring this free update for customers who purchased the IXEG 737 on or after February 7th, 2022. This has given us the ability to focus on where we want the 737 to go into the future, and we hope you'll like what you initially see!īack on February 7th, 2022, a little after Laminar Research announced X-Plane 12 was coming, we published on the IXEG 737 product page that purchasing customers would receive a free product update to the X-Plane 12 version. Things have changed a lot since the last X-Plane 11 update, one of them being that is now full time in add-on development instead of juggling between real life jobs and that of our virtual world. The following will serve as a brief summary of what's to come, as well as a bit of a roadmap on where things will go. It's with a lot of excitement and appreciated patience that we are ready to announce what's to come for IXEG's future! The team chose to let the dust settle a bit and not have too wide of a moving target in the early days of X-Plane 12 so as to not waste development time. |
